DongguancountywasestablishedinthesixthyearofXianheintheEasternJinDynasty(331A.D.),initiallynamedBao'an,underthejurisdictionofDongguancounty.In757,itwasrenamedDongguan,andthecountygovernmentwastransferredfromWucheng(nowBaoanNantou)toYongcheng(nowGuancheng).Inthe22ndyearofShaoxingintheSouthernSongDynasty(1152),XiangshantowninDongguanwasestablishedasXiangshanCounty(nowZhongshanCity);inthefirstyearofWanliintheMingDynasty(1573),DongguanwasestablishedasXin'anCounty(nowBao'anDistrict,ShenzhenCity)withatotalof56Lihouseholds.TheQingDynastywasruledbytheMingDynasty.DuringtheperiodoftheRepublicofChina,itsuccessivelybelongedtoGuangdongProvince,GuangdongProvince,Guangdongcentraladministrativeregion,thefirstadministrativeregionandthefourthadministrativeregion.

InFebruary1956,thecentralGuangdongadministrativeregionwasabolishedandDongguancountywassubordinatetoHuiyangDistrict.
InNovember1958,DongguancountywasonceattachedtoGuangzhouCityforashorttime.
InJanuary1959,HuiyangDistrictwasabolishedandDongguancountywasassignedtoFoshandistrict.
InJune1963,HuiyangDistrictwasrestored,andDongguancountywassubordinatetoHuiyangDistrict.

[rivers]themainriversinDongguanareDongjiangRiver,ShimaRiverandHanxiriver.96%oftheterritorybelongstotheDongjiangRiverBasin.ThemainstreamoftheDongjiangRiverflowsfromBOLUOcountyandHuiyangDistrictofHuizhouCityinthenortheast,andthenalongthenorthernborderfromeasttowesttoQiaotouxinkaihekou.ItflowsintoShimaRiver,whichoriginatesfromBao'anDistrictofShenzhenCity,andintoQishiRiver,whichflowsintoQishicity.AfterShilongisseparatedfromtheSouthtributary,thenorthmainstreamflowstoShitan,convergeswiththetributaryfromZengchengCity,Guangzhou,andflowsintoShiziyangthroughDashengcity.TheSouthtributaryflowsobliquelysouthwestthroughShijieandWanjiangRiver,andreceivesHanxiwaterfromthemiddleofShiziyangcityatthegorge.Belowthegorge,therearethreesmallertributaries,NiushanRiver,gedishuiRiverandXiaoshaRiver,whichflowfromeasttowest,andthenflowstoSishengandflowsintoShiziyang.BetweenthenorthmainstreamandtheSouthBranchistherivernetworkareaofDongjiangDelta.
[climate]Dongguanhasasubtropicalmonsoonclimate,withlongsummerandnowinter,abundantlight,abundantheat,warmclimate,smalltemperaturevariation,abundantrainfallandobviousdryandwetseasons.In2011,theprecipitationwaslow,thetemperaturewaslow,andtherewasnopositiveattackoftropicalcyclone.Theannualaveragetemperatureis22.1℃,0.5℃lowerthantheannualaverage;thecoldestisJanuary(monthlyaveragetemperatureis10.6℃),thehottestisAugust(monthlyaveragetemperatureis29.3℃),andthehightemperature(dailymaximumtemperature≥35℃)lastsfor8days.Theannualextrememaximumtemperaturewas36.2℃(appearedonJuly25,2011),andtheannualextrememinimumtemperaturewas3.2℃(appearedonJanuary12,2011).Theannualtotalrainfallin2011was1298.6mm,29.1%lessthantheannualaverage;thetotalrainfallinfloodseason(AprilSeptember)was1014.9mm,32.8%lessthantheannualaverage.Duringtheyear,therewasnopositiveattackoftropicalcyclones,onlyaffectedbythecirculationof"Haima"and"Nasha",whichdidnotcauseobviousdisasters.
