I had just moved to San Antonio,Texas.I worked for the tour bus service taking tourists on a short
tour of the city's historic places and would end up at the Alamo.
It was back from my last tour of the day.It was a cool February day on my way back from the San Fernando Catholic church with no one on my bus when I saw a man dressed rags, thinking this person must be an actor or somebody walking around.I stopped and asked him,"Need a ride?" Without saying anything he just walked on board and sat down in a seat behind me.
"Where you heading?" I asked him .He looked up into the mirror at me and replied."I've got to get to the fort(要塞) and report to Colonel(上校)Travis that the Mexicans are here!" I laughed to myself thinking that this man was a serious actor.
"I'm guessing you mean the Alamo?" I said back to him.I looked up and saw he wasn't smiling nor
laughing. All throughout the ride he was staring in amazement at all the towering skyscrapers and the buildings along the street.
"I remember when this town was nothing more than a little trading village!" He finally said to me.
"So what's your name?" I asked him.
"Daniel Cloud,yours?"
"David Zime." I replied as I turned the corner of the street and laid eyes upon the Alamo.
I pulled up to the sidewalk and opened the door.Cloud got out of his seat and came up to me.
"Thanks for the ride." He said extending his hand.I took his palm and it was freezing cold as if he had just stepped out of the freezer.
"Not a problem Mr.Cloud, and don't worry about the fee.it's on the house." He nodded his head gratitude as all we Texans do and walked away.
It wasn't until then that I noticed that he was soaked to the bone in dripping(滴落的)water and we had not a single drop of rain in a month or more.I just shook my head and closed the door behind him. When I turned around,I discovered amazingly how fast Cloud had gone away.
A few days later I was reading a book about the Battle of the Alamo when I discovered the most
shocking thing I had ever discovered. The names of the 183 defenders of the Alamo were listed on one of the pages, including Daniel Cloud, who spotted the Mexicans before they took over the streets of San Antonio in February of 1836,and his post was on top of the San Fernando Church where I had picked him up!

Over the past few years I've had an uncomfortable sense that someone,or something, has been making changes to my brain.I'm not thinking the way I used to think.I can feel it most strongly when I'm reading.Involving myself in a book or a lengthy article used to be easy. That's rarely the case anymore.
I think I know what's going on.For over a decade,I've been spending lots of time online,The Web has been a godsend to me as a writer.Research that once required days in the rooms of libraries can now be done in minutes by a few Google searches.Even when I'm not working,I'm scanning headlines or just tripping from link to link.
The Net is becoming a universal medium where information flows through my eyes and ears and
into my mind. The perfect recall of silicon memory(硅制存储器)can be a blessing to thinking. But that comes at a price. As the media theorist Marshall McLuhan pointed out, media are not just passive channels of information. They supply the stuff of thought, but they also shape the process of thought. And what the Net seems to be doing is weakening my ability for concentration.Once I was a diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a flying swallow.
I'm not the only one. When I mention my troubles with reading to acquaintances,Bruce Friedman,a
blogger, also has described how the Internet has switched his mental habits,His thinking has taken on a “staccato”(碎读) quality. “I can't read War and Peace anymore,” he admitted.“I've lost the ability to do that.”
A recently published study suggests that when reading online,we tend to become“mere decoders(解码器)of information”.We are not only what we read; we are how we read.
32.According to the passage,the author thinks .
A.the New is merely a headache
B.he can no longer dive but swim shallowly
C.the once naturally deep reading has become a struggle
D.other people around rarely have similar feelings like him
33.From the passage, the more people use the Web, .
A.the more mental habits can be improved
B.the more they have to fight to stay focused
C.the more they are influenced in shape
D.the more online activities they can enjoy
34.What is the author's attitude towards the Internet?
A.Thoroughly passive.
B.Totally puzzled.
C.Gladly approving.
D.Evidently worried.
35.Which of the following can best summarize the text?
A.Is the Net gradually making us stupid?
B.Long articles are hard to read nowadays.
C.Do people lack concentration to cover Web pages?
D.More Web involvement results from attention distraction.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

选项中有两项为多余选项。
How spies Are Trained
36 A navy, army or air-force officer who has a gift for languages, and at the same time is
thoroughly trained in the technical side of his work may be considered for active employment.A
businessman who travels a great deal may be considered for active employment. After his background has been thoroughly investigated,a man living abroad may be useful as a spy.
In Britain potential spies are to get through psychological tests. For instance,a candidate can be taken in front of a high barrier of barbed (装有倒钩的)wire and told to cross it safely. Also,a spy must be unusually courageous. 37 But a spy risks death alone.
The German system of spy training during World War II was more dramatic. After being given a
thorough medical examination,he was led to a shooting range where a machine-gun suddenly opened fire and to his horror a group of men fell to the ground, apparently dead. 38
Today a prospective new master comer is sent to what might be called a spy school where his training is more extensive. He must master codes and ciphers(密码)and develop an extremely great
memory because writing them down will be too dangerous. He must become a skilled radio operator and be able to repair his own equipment and he must be able to drive make of car. 39 He must be trained in the art of burglary and be skilled at opening locks.
40 So it is just understandable that spy schools are not open to everyone.Above all, still another quality is required. He must be a man of moral soundness.Yet he must be prepared to lower himself to the meanest crime in order to complete his assignment successfully.
A.A soldier fights supported by his comrades.
B.He must become an expert in unarmed fight.
C.A spy must necessarily be carefully selected.
D.The doctor immediately took his pulse and tested his heart.
E.There are several factors causing someone to become a spy.
F.Spying is at any tome a confidential, never learning the manes of any other spies.

When festivals are coming, people will buy presents for cherished ones.It is 41 except that they will make the same obvious mistakes and buy the wrong gift. 42 10% gifts are returned each year and the percentage of 43 gifts is surely higher, considering nice people may not return presents.
What's going on? Gift-buying has become a cheatingly selfish 44 .We don't actually look for
things people want. 45 ,we tend to look for things we want to give.“Gift-givers want to 46 how well they know a person by choosing a 47 gift,” Mary Steffel,a professor studying gift-giving,“but people aren't very food at 48 what others want.”
Research has shown that givers tend to 49 the gifts they buy more than receivers. The problem
comes from an inappropriate 50 that thoughtful presents are the best.In fact, they 51 well be the worst presents. The more thought you put into a present, the more 52 you are to get away from buying what the receiver actually wants. In other words, people let their gift-giving ego(自我意识)get 53 of great presents, 54 for the one they want to show they know really well.Fortunately, the 55 of guessing what people want is simple:stop it.
“People want 56 they happen to want in the moment, something specific,”Steffel said,“You are must better off asking people what they want.”So,buy something that 57 for more choices, like gift cards.
Steffel gave an example to show how a giver's thoughtfulness can miss the 58 .Say a friend
really likes alcohol. You might think to buy him a drink-maker(调酒器).But a drink-maker,even if he has a strong thirst for alcohol,is actually a pretty 59 present. The best is to give him enough cash to buy the device, and then accept the 60 that he's probably going to buy something be wants mush more.

Dear Mr.Green,
I am very exciting to learn that we are going to start a magazine together. That sounds great! But I
definitely agree with you on that.
Some of the columns what you mentioned in your last letter are really my cup of tea.“Culture Express ”gives you a better understanding of the world.Since people from different parts of the world had different values,it's necessary to learn of each other. This will offer wonderful chance.Apart from that,“Blurt Out”is pretty good for us Chinese students to learn English idioms and improve oral English.Last but not least,“Entertainment”is so cool! The popular singers, actor and celebrities are so catchy and attractive that we teenagers absolutely can't miss it!
Well,I can't list most.I really can't wait to be read that magazine!
Yours faithfully,
