1.Introduction
Thepurposeofthisreportistoexaminethefeasibilityofholdingalltrainingcoursesin-house.Externaltrainingproviderswereconsulted,estimatesoftrainingcostswerereceived,andcomparativecostsexamined.Questionnaireswerecompletedby80employeesfromfourdepartmentsand10oftherespondentswereinterviewedbymembersofthetrainingdepartment.
2.Advantages
2.1?Followingconsultationwithfourofthecompany’sregularly-usedexternaltrainingproviders,itwascalculatedthatin-housetrainingwould?reduce?thepresentcostby26%inthefirstyear.
2.2?Itwasfeltby65%ofthestaffthattrainingcoursescouldbebetter?designed?tosuitthespecificneedsoftheorganization,andthereforebringbenefittothecompanyasawhole.
2.3?45%ofthosewhorespondedtothequestionnairefeltthattheyweremorelikelytoparticipateintrainingcoursesiftheywereheldon-site.
3.Disadvantages
3.1?Somerespondents,particularlyinthesalesdepartment,expressedconcernthatvaluablebusinesscontactsarisingfromexternaltrainingcourseswouldbelostifalltrainingwasheldin-house.
3.2?Sometrainingneedsareveryspecific,andmayonlyberequiredbyoneortwostaffmembers.Itwasfeltthatthesecouldnotalwaysbemetbyin-housetrainingcourses,asthenecessaryexpertisecouldnotalwaysbebroughtinfromoutside.
3.3?Participationinexternaltrainingcoursesisseenby30%ofrespondentsasaperkofthejob,anditwasfeltthatthismotivationalfactorwouldbediminishedwiththeprovisionofalltrainingin-house.
4.Conclusions
Asaresultofananalysisoftheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofprovidingalltrainingin-house,thefollowingconclusionscanbedrawn:
Considerablesavingswillbemadeintheimmediatefutureifin-housetrainingcoursesareintroduced.
Thestaffresponseisfavourableoverall,particularlyathigherlevelsofmanagement,thoughinsomedepartmentsthelossofexternaltrainingcoursesisseentobearealdisadvantage,withthelossofbusinesscontacts.
Whilemanyemployeesfeelthatin-housetrainingisapositivemoveandislikelytoincreaseparticipation,30%regardeditasalossofaperk.
5.Recommendations
In-housetrainingcoursesshouldbeintroducedwhereasignificantnumberofparticipantsarerequiredtoattend.
Wheretherearefewerthanfiveparticipants,externalcoursesshouldbeanoption.?Staffshouldbeconsultedregularlyastothelevelofsatisfactionwithin-house?trainingcourses,andfeedbackregardingmotivationalfactorsshouldbeaddressed.
